Independence got its 93rd straight win Friday night when it beat West Charlotte 17-6 in the season opener for both teams. However, Patriots head coach Tom Knotss was not happy with his team's lowest score in the six year streak. Charlotte Catholic Preview

Charlotte Catholic will go for the three-peat this year. The Cougars have won back to back state titles (2AA in 2004, 3AA in 2005), and look like they've got a good shot at repeating with tailback Ben Herlocker, the most valuable player in last year's championship game, back for his senior season.

Herlocker, who has verbally committed to play his college ball at East Carolina, is a big reason why Charlotte Catholic brings a 32-game win streak into this season. Last year Herlocker carried the ball 192 times for 1,713 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Herlocker isn't the only start on the Cougars, also returning for his senior season is offensive lineman Henry Lawson, who has verbally committed to North Carolina State.

2006 Charlotte Catholic High School Football Schedule

8/25 at Myers Park

Ex-Carolina Panther Explains Why He Resigned As Head Coach of Charlotte Christian

Former Carolina Panther Kevin Donnalley's career as head coach of Charlotte Christian ended after just one year on the job. Over the weekend, the Charlotte Observer reported that the "inappropriate disciplinary action" took against a player, included the head coach tackling a defensive back during practice on August 5th.

Donnalley has been replaced as head coach by assistants Mike Rose and Eugene Robinson, who will be interim co-coaches.

Robinson, you may remember, is the former Atlanta Falcon, who was arrested the night before his team played in the Super Bowl on charges that he gave an undercover officer #40 for sex.

National Powers Indepedence (NC) and Byrnes (SC) Square-off In Scrimmage

WOW...too bad Independence (Charlotte, NC) and Byrnes (Duncan, SC) didn't meet during the regular season instead of scrimmaging each other Saturday night. If they had, America would have been treated to one top-notch battle, that not only would have determined bragging rights in the Carolina's, but also possibly in the United States.

Independence owns the nation's longest active win streak at 92 games, while Bynes has won four straight 4A Division II state titles. In fact, The Sporting News has Independence ranked #9 in its national pre-season Top 25 poll, and Byrnes is right behind at #10.

As far as the scrimmage was concerned, but coaches treated the first half like the game counted!

Byrnes jumped out to a 21-0 lead behind quarterback Will Korn, who has verbally committed to Clemson. Korn completed 17 of 30 passes for 135 yards, and also run for 29-yards and two touchdowns. The Independence starters battled back to close to within 21-14 before both head coaches pulled the starters.

In the end, Indepedence's back-ups scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to give the Patriots a 28-21 win.

Alma Mater Honors NFL's Top Draft Pick

You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy. Those were the words of the NFL's top draft pick Mario Williams, who returned to his high school stomping grounds over the weekend.

A crowd of 600 people turned out at Richlands High School for "Mario Williams Day" at the high school football field. Not bad for a town of about 1,000 people, that will be keeping a close eye on Williams' career as a Houston Texan.

Williams, who owns a $54 million dollar contract with the Texans, says he's still old country and will stay that way.
