2008 North Carolina High School Football Season Starts Tonight

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Optimism is running high for every high school football team in North Carolina as the regular season begins this weekend.

For the first time in eight years, Independence isn't heading into the season as the defending champs, however, don't count the Patriots out of things. Last year's 28-17 loss to New Bern in the 4AA title game denied the Patriots their eighth straight state championship, and that should be motivation enough for the team's to push hard for a ninth straight finals appearance.

A report in this week's Charlotte Observer said that the team looked strong in scrimmage against Byrnes (Duncan, SC), which this week was ranked #1 in the USA Today Super 25 Pre-Season rankings. Byrnes was only up 21-14 when both teams began subbing according to the newspaper. Byrnes won 31-14.
