West Rowan's Scott Young Suffers Heart Attack

by Jeff Fisher
North Carolina High School Football Huddle

High School Football America wishes a speedy recovery to West Rowan head coach Scott Young, who suffered a heart attack on Monday.

Young has let the Falcons to three straight 3A state titles. In the season opener, West Rowan saw its 46-game game win streak snapped. The will bring an 8-2 record into the season finale against West Iredell.

In the inaugural broadcast of High School Football America's weekly radio show,  I spoke with Young. Click here to listen to that interview.

Seventy-First High School's Bob Paroli Talks about his 400th Win on High School Football America

by Jeff Fisher
North Carolina High School Football Huddle

Seventy-First High School's Bob Paroli, who last week became just the ninth high school football coach to win 400 games, joined me on last night's High School Football America radio show to talk about his milestone.

Paroli, who is in his 54th year as a head coach, captured #400 last Friday when his Falcons beat E.E Smith 24-14.

Coach Paroli told me it was great to celebrate the milestone with his son Michael, who's been by his side as an assistant for 28 years.  He now stands just tens behind Jack Holley, who is North Carolina's winningest head coach with 410 victories.

Click here to listen to the interview with Coach Paroli.

Another North Carolina High School Football Streak Ends

by Jeff Fisher
North Carolina High School Football Huddle

Tarboro now knows the feeling that defending state champs Butler and West Rowan felt over the weekend.

Monday night Nash Central beat the two-time defending champ 38-28 to snap the Vikings' 23-game win streak.

The game was tied 20-20 after one quarter, but it was all Bulldogs after that when they went on an 18-0 run.

On Friday, West Rowan's 46-game streak was snapped, while Butler's 31-game win streak came to an end.

North Carolina High School Football Scores - Week 1

by Jeff Fisher
North Carolina High School Football Huddle
Two long win streaks came to a close Friday night as the 2011 regular season kicked-off.

The nation's longest active win streak ended when Mooresville beat West Rowan 21-14.  West Rowan, which had won 46 straight, jumped-out to a 14-0 lead, but Mooresville scored two touchdowns in a three minute span in the fourth quarter to pull-out the victory.

The longest active win streak now belongs to Phoebus (Hampton, VA).  The Phantoms have won 45 straight.

Back on July 21st, I spoke with West Rowan head coach Scott Young on the High School Football America radio show about the pressure of the streak and four-straight 3A state championships.  Click here to listen to that interview and the entire show.

Meanwhile, two-time defending state champ Butler saw its 31-game win streak end.

Mallard Creek beat the Bulldogs 28-20.  It was the first game new Butler head coach Brian Hales, who took over for Mike Newsome, who left the Bulldogs to take the head coaching job at A.J. Brown High School in Kannapolis.

Mallard Creek was led by quarterback Andrew Goodman threw for two touchdowns.

High School Football Player with Down Syndrome Not Allowed to Participate Due to Age Restrictions

by Jeff Fisher

Here's a story that proves that sometimes rules are meant to be broken or at least in some cases need to be bent.

On the surface, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association is doing the right thing by following its rule to not allow 19-year old Brett Bowden of Hobbton High School to practice and play with his team because he is over the state's age limit for participation.  However, Bowden, who is a junior, has down syndrome and this is where, I think, common sense needs to come.

Bowden has spent the last two season wearing a full uniform during the games and practicing with his teammates.

According to several published reports, Bowden's teammates and the community have found his position on the team to be inspirational.  That is evidenced by the fact that more than 47,000 people have signed-up for the "Let Brett Bowden Play" Facebook page in the last two days.

The rule states that student-athletes who turn 19 on or before August 31st are ineligible to play.  Brett turned 19 in May.

Yesterday, one story headline from FOXNews.com read that the Brett had been "kick-off the team".  That caused NCHSAA commissioner Davis Whitfield to issue a statement that reads:

"I want to be clear that the student-athlete has not been 'kicked off the team,' " Whitfield said. "Brett Bowden could still be a part of the team, lead his team on the field, wear his jersey and be with his teammates, including some of the postgame activities he has done in the past."

Bottom line here, I do believe that rules are rules.  However, in this case, what is it going to hurt to allow Brett to suit up for the games as long as he doesn't go onto the field to participate in an actual game?

Here's hoping that common sense prevails and Brett is allowed to wear his uniform proudly once again!

North Carolina High School Football Huddle

After 13 very successful years at the helm of the Shelby High School football program, Chris Norman has announced his retirement.

Norman, who took over the program in 1998, amassed a record of 147-39-1 with three state titles.  In addition to state titles in 1998, 2005 and 2006, Norman let the school to runner-up finishes in 2004 and 2007.

The Shelby Star reports that Norman is very proud of his accomplishments at his alma mater.

North Carolina High School Football Huddle

High school football practice will begin a day earlier this year in the Tar Heel State.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has agreed to move the start date for practice from August 1st to July 30th.  Under the new schedule, players will only wear helmets on the first two days; shoulder pads will be added on day three; and then full contact will be allowed on day five.
