Charlotte Catholic's Oddo Closes-in on 300-Win Club

by Jeff Fisher
North Carolina High School Football Huddle

Like 3,000 hits in baseball, the 300-win mark in high school football makes you a legend, no matter what state you're in.

As Charlotte Catholic enters the 2009 season, Jim Oddo, who is entering his 36th year of coaching the Cougars, needs two wins to reach that very special number. The Charlotte Observer has a very good story on the man, who says at 73 he's a little more "mellower now".

How Sweet It Is For Charlotte Christian

by Jeff Fisher
North Carolina High School Football Huddle

Call it a sign of the times in North Carolina. When the Charlotte Observer released its much anticipated Sweet 16 pre-season rankings, it wasn't powerful Independence or Butler or event defending 4AA champ Richmond Senior at the top of the heap, it was Charlotte Christian, which plays in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association.

According to the Observer, it was the first time that a private school started the season #1.

Here's the Sweet 16 with links to pre-season stories:

1. Charlotte Christian (9-3)
2. West Rowan (15-1)
3. Butler (12-2)
4. Independence (13-1)
5. Mallard Creek (0-10)
6. Rock Hill Northwestern (13-2)
7. Kannapolis Brown (13-3)
8. Charlotte Catholic (11-3)
9. Rock Hill (11-3)
10. Boiling Springs Crest (8-5)
11. Rock Hill South Pointe (15-0)
12. Belmont South Point (13-2)
13. Shelby (9-4)
14. East Mecklenburg (10-3)
15. Albemarle (12-2)
16. (tie) Lancaster (SC) (10-4)
16. (tie) West Charlotte (9-4)
